Mark your calendars for the evening of Friday, February 17, 2012. The Freshfields Village is hosting its annual Art Walk and Wine Tasting. Several shops and galleries will be featuring a LowCountry artist. The Photographics Gallery is proud to feature Kiawah Island's own Shar Duffy and her collection of new oil paintings. It's totally worth the trip to The Village (at the roundabout between Kiawah and Seabrook Islands) to sample some wine and appetizers while viewing some amazing artwork. What a great way to spend a Charleston winter evening.

"Rising Mist" Woodburn and Oil by Michael Cyra I had fun with this piece. I started by sketching the trees and marsh grass with a woodburning tool on a black walnut panel. Next I applied thin layers of oil paint with a technique called glaziing. I finished up with a layer of varnish and added this cool stucco-like frame. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

I walked off Seabrook Island to Nancy Island and painted this scene during Bill Jameson's Oil Painting Workshop. This is such a gorgeous location! |

 | This is from my latest "Foggy Mirror" series. I'm painting foggy marsh scenes on wood panels and framing the square panel with a bevel-cut mirror above the painting. If you so choose, you can admire your own beauty along with one of my original oils. ...who's the fairest of them all? |

I'm finally recovering from my shoulder surgery last month. The good news is I can hold both a camera and a brush real steady now! Kinda important for an artist, no? This is a recent painting I finished called Tangerine Dreams. I worked on it throughout a workshop taught by Chris Groves of the Horton Hayes Gallery. Chris is an excellent artist and a giving instructor as well.

My latest project was to paint images of local fish on these NOAA marine charts. Each chart is mounted to foamcore and has a watercolor painting rendition of a fish popular with local fishermen. These painted charts can be custom ordered with a specific depicted coastal region and fish species. You can also have these charts custom framed right at the gallery. |

My first blog entry for this website is a BIG THANK YOU to Steven Hyatt of Imaging Arts who helped me set up this Joomla-based website. I couldn't have done it without him. |
